Coconut mats for a naturally designed pond edge
A coconut mat can visually connect the transition between water and garden. The brown fiber fabric blends in between stones and bankside plants and, depending on the design, is suitable as a base for greenery. For this task there are open coconut fabrics, denser mats and models with built-in plant pockets. A doormat for the entrance to the house serves a different purpose and should therefore not be chosen as a pond mat solely because of its material.
Select the appropriate version
Before buying, it's worth taking a look at the width, length, mesh size and weight per unit area. What matters is which area actually needs to be covered and whether plants should grow through the fabric. Measure the bank section including its curves and take any necessary overlaps into account. For a product with plant bags, the bag size, filling and the location requirements of the intended plants are also important. Compare the specific design and the manufacturer's instructions instead of just looking at the price of a roll.
Take pond liner and water level into account
The mat is placed so that it lies securely and does not slip. Fasteners must not damage the pond liner. Natural fibers can transmit water: A continuous connection from the pond water via the capillary barrier to the surrounding garden soil should therefore be avoided. The open fabric does not replace a waterproof film. On embankments it can support superficial greenery; It does not provide structural protection for an unstable slope. The manufacturer provides information on this Aquagart for laying bank mats.
Plan care and planting
After laying, check regularly whether fastenings and edges are still in place. Even after heavy rain or changes on the bank, it makes sense to take a look at the facility. For plantable models, the substrate and water depth depend on the plants selected. Plant bags made of coconut fabric can help to place individual plants specifically on the bank.
